come and get it

spring is coming.

this is the time of year where i get so ravenously consumed with its impending arrival, i'm practically losing my mind.
_ _ _

i'd bet most of you are feeling the same way i am about winter clothes: over it.

so i found a few super cheap dresses with sleeves that can easily be worn now and later.

plus, they're so affordable, you can treat yourself to a drink or two afterward.

from top: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9

i can't believe there's a work-appropriate dress for less than $10  out there.

have fun shopping!

spring things

but i'm the kind of person who is always excited about something in dc.

so here's just some of what i'm looking forward to this spring.

img sources: 1 (me) | 2  | 3 | 4 | 5

2. steak and ice. the taylor sub guys are already killing it with their original stores, but i haven't tried their cheesesteaks yet. i have a feeling they won't disappoint. (mmmmmm. cheeeese.)

3. going to see the cherry blossoms during off-peak hours. i have a former boss who would go every year at dawn with her husband. they'd bring some breakfast to share and just enjoy the view. romantic, right? no crowds, no noise, no problems.

4. checking out ambar. their food looks incredible and i can't wait to go.

5. the arrival of a nordstrom rack downtown. bring on the deals.

_ _ _

man, i love this town.

potw: black and white

black and white letterpress always makes a nice statement: crisp, clean, and unfussy.

clockwise from top left: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4

that first card would be perfect for anyone extra special in your life.

it's a stick up

ever look at the back of a street sign in dc?

or peer down one of our many alleys?

i bet you saw a sticker, right? they're everywhere.

the next time you're walking around town, check it out.

now boarding all rows

i travel a lot.

in 2012, i think i traveled more than any other year.

and as much as i hate unpacking after a trip (isn't it awful?), i actually love packing (psst: roll your clothes instead of folding them to maximize suitcase space).

i haven't done a 'very necessary' post in a while, so i thought i'd share my carry-on essentials.

starting from up top:

scarf: i like to bring a lightweight scarf for chilly airplanes and drafty airports. you never know what the temps are going to be and i hate feeling cold.

comfortable clothes: for me, dresses offer the most comfort when sitting down for a long period of time. you can always find me in a dress when traveling.

socks: if i'm wearing flats or sandals, i always throw a pair of socks in my purse when i'm heading to the airport. there's nothing worse than having to remove your shoes in the security line and walk around that nasty airport floor barefoot. not happening.

a large purse with some structure: something big enough to hold all your essentials. for me, this includes travel reading material, something to snack on, a travel wallet, my precious mascara (can't buy it at CVS if luggage gets lost), toilet seat covers for airplane/airport bathrooms and a jewelry roll that holds all the accessories i'm bringing. i take no chances with my luggage being misplaced and potentially losing these forever.

what are your travel necessities?

bedazzler chic

we're already putting jeweled clusters on our ears, why not our clothes?

you can break the bank with these looks or keep it budget friendly. your call.

here's some of my favorite ways to add some chunky sparkle to your life.

top half: 1 | 2 (sold out) in black | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6
bottom half: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

the top half features the more reasonably priced items and on the bottom...well, they're fun to look at anyways.

crunchy apple slaw

the other day, i had a chopped moment.

the boy and i had these little fish nuggets we'd planned to use for tacos, but we didn't have any slaw. i like some crunch with my tacos.

i'd made my own slaw using cabbage before, but cabbage isn't an ingredient we usually have laying around. all we had was some iceberg so i decided to use that as a substitute.

turns out?

this is my new favorite cole slaw.

crunchy, tangy, bright with a little bit of heat.

and because it has apples in it, you KNOW i added acid. the next time you find yourself with some unadorned fish tacos or a desire to add some mayo-free slaw to your pulled pork sandwich, try this recipe.

admittedly, i'm still getting used to owning a food processor. we got one as a wedding present, and i've been trying to use it more and more. but, as you can see in the picture,  i sliced the apples using the wrong blade. i shoulda used the shredding blade, but it still worked out.

lesson learned for next time.

but this slaw makes a pretty killer addition to anything that needs a little extra crunch. it's also dairy-free and vegan.

i was so happy we were able to use that leftover lettuce in a new way. and because there's just two of us, i only used half a head and half an apple. but doubling the recipe would also work if you have a crowd.

metallic mania

more and more metallic shoes keep popping up. simple, classic color palettes of black, white, gold and camel are everywhere.

i can't afford most of these, but some (j. crew, most likely) will end up going on sale.

those 90-dollar ones are calling my name though. they'd be perfect for adding a little bit of interest to a basic outfit.

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

and even though i'm lacking the funds required for those rose-gold ankle strap heels, that particular shade of metallic is still my current favorite

potw: red

do you know how hard it is to find non-valentine's red cards a few days before the 14th?

since we covered yellow and blue recently, i thought i'd round out the primary colors with red today.

and i did end up including a valentine. that fox card just made me laugh because while i've seen PLENTY variations on the 'roses are red..." thing, this was a new one.

_ _ _

i'm in the very slow process of redesigning the blog, and i've chosen to go with a primary color palette for it. those colors have been really speaking to me lately. bright, bold, fun--it's perfect.
_ _ _

i caught this nasty cold and it wiped me out last week and through the weekend. the worst.

i'm starting to feel back to normal today, thankfully.

also. i don't know if there's any fellow GIRLS viewers here, but i really disliked this week's episode. it was basically a monologue with unnecessary-to-the-plot nudity.

anyways, hope your monday is looking good.

love for the city: rowhouses, part I

continuing with the 'love for the city' series

_ _ _

if there's one thing about dc that i would ever consider labeling my favorite, this is it.

the rowhouses.

every neighborhood has them, each with their own style. even on a single block where the houses are all designed the same, each will have their own personality with different paint colors.

intricate details, bay windows, roof ornaments, masterful cement carvings, painted trim work. i think it's stunning and taking pictures of these beautiful structures never seems to get old to me.
_ _ _

i took most of these in the early fall. as i started to edit them, i realized i needed to make this a multi-part series.

there's just too much goodness to share.

so here's part I. i hope you enjoy it as much as i enjoyed taking these pics.

stay tuned for part II.

spell check

awaiting this opening
at brunch
at home
at sundevich (well, outside of it anyways)

no matter how long it's been since elementary school, i still find myself saying "feb-bruuuu-ary" in my head when i write it down. it's just one of those words for me. i have to think about it every time.

method is another problem word for me. i sing this every time i type it.

_ _ _

i had a good weekend. it went by so fast but i guess i say that all the time.

of all the months, february is my least favorite. but only three months separate it from my favorite month so there's something.

here's to a new week in the shortest month.

potw: blues

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5

first yellow, now blue.

this cheery color is perfect to celebrate any occasion...or nothing at all.

blue and white is so timeless and fresh.

long week

we made it.

this week felt so long.

i'm off to brunch on sunday, among the many other supercool things i have planned like returning stuff to ikea and target.

don't be jealous.

have an awesome weekend!

cluster struck

well, oversized cluster earrings kinda give off the same vibe.

and these funky statement makers keep it classy.

while some are still a little pricey (oh, oscar), there's lots of reasonably priced options out there too.

i love how these pieces combine different shapes, sizes and colors too.

i used a gift card to purchase those red ones and i have been wearing them all the time. almost too often because they work with so many things.

maybe i should just buy another pair.
