as dc winters go, we've had a lot of snow this year. but anyone who lived here in 2010 will definitely remember snowpocalypse/snowmageddon and the near-weeklong closures it brought with it.

i was living in dupont circle at the time, right on 17th and massachusetts.

after the snow finally stopped falling, the sun came out and since we were going stir crazy, we went for a walk to the mall and downtown to check out the aftermath.

this was dc in february 2010. under more than three feet of snow.

i've started to hear some rumors of more snow next tuesday. yikes.

happy spring?

two days

the vernal equinox is in two days. old man winter decided to have one last laugh yesterday, but they say warmer temps are on the horizon.

in terms of the weather, it was a strange weekend. temps in the 60s, upper 40s, 20s. the days that were warm, trust that we took full advantage and went on plenty of long walks in the sun. my new favorite thing to do after work.

i also had time to make my favorite no-knead bread recipe, which, if you haven't tried, you have to. it'll make you look like an expert baker (check out that golden brown crust!) and i promise you it's the easiest recipe you'll ever try.

the view from our porch this morning. 

my work actually didn't have an official snow day but i decided to work from home anyways. i think they're sick of all the days off.

here's to spring. glorious, glorious spring.

when i'm sick, i get really annoying and tell my husband some form of "ugh. i don't feel good" way too often. 

the same thing happens every year about this time when i get really really sick of winter. i want to say that every two seconds but i force myself not to because we're all in the same boat. the time change on march 9 is the only thing keeping me going at this point. i'm so ready for spring. who isn't?

we had a pack and play set up in our living room while i was on maternity leave. it made diaper changes easier since i had all my supplies right there. and when he was really little, he used to nap in it. but i always hated it in our living room and we are replacing it with this. i can't wait. i've missed the lack of seating in that room when we have the occasional visitor.

man the amount of daylight hours are really dwindling. this winter hasn't been so bad but i won't be sad to wave goodbye to these days of darkness before five.

i'm still out on maternity leave and i'm so grateful for this extra special time with my little man. it's cool spending time together and just hanging out.

at the end of this week, we're all headed to charleston for a week. i've been keeping my eye on the forecast and see some temps in the seventies. i would be so happy to ditch the coat for a second.

yesterday after the snow stopped falling, the sun came out.

right around three o'clock, the afternoon light was just about perfect so i pulled myself away from the breaking bad marathon we had going on and took a few pics of the rosebush in our front yard.

in winter's past, i've gone with a cobalt coat and loved it. think i might do the same this year. the little puffed sleeves on that banana republic number (#4, under $225) are calling me.

and in case you're wondering, the perfect rain/snow day snack is a grilled cheese made with white cheddar, a granny smith apple slice, mustard, and sriracha.

i had a good weekend. it went by so fast but i guess i say that all the time.

of all the months, february is my least favorite. but only three months separate it from my favorite month so there's something.

this past week of weather perfectly illustrates why people hate winter. 

cold and wet. grey. gloomy.

after the holidays are long gone, we're still faced with nearly three full months of winter. 

and it starts with you, january.

and even though march can still bring the pain, it just sounds better than january and february to me.

we made the best of this weekend though: hung out with some good friends, checked out some art (free and not outside!), got some good food.

starting a new series today for two reasons:

first, i used to take pictures a lot more and i really miss it. 

the other reason? 

just an excuse to show off the city some more. dc's so beautiful.

while my 'love for the city' feature focuses on the big reasons why i love this town (the dogs, the fall leaves, the call boxes to name a few), this one will get down and dirty with the details.

a stop-and-smell-the-roses ode to the district, more or less. the little things we see every day, but may not stop to notice.

the subject of today's first post is probably obvious, but whether you love or hate how dc reacts to cold weather, you can't deny that freshly fallen snow is a thing of beauty.

i took these this morning while i was out shoveling our sidewalk--a first for this new homeowner. i was an apartment dweller from 2004-2011 so having to deal with the sidewalk is something new.

potw: yellow

i've never owned a black coat.

in the winter, when it's pitch black before 5 pm and some days, the sun doesn't even show itself, i need some color. i need to be that person in a bright blue coat. or, even better, a yellow one. (i own both.)

i'm always surprised at the lack people who chose brightly colored outerwear, but to each their own.

anyways, i'm off topic.

it's a warm winter day here in dc, but it's super overcast. it was like this yesterday too. so for today's press of the week, i thought i'd share some cheery yellow designs.

everyone in dc is talking about it, but even for our roller coaster winters, this is warm.

we babysat our one-and-a-half-year-old nephew this weekend, and it was great to be able to spend some time outside at the park with him.

and considering how insanely cold it was for inauguration four years ago (i'm the mummy on the right), it would be pretty nice to have some mild temperatures for that event next week.
