spring five

three cheers for friday.

i do one of these lists every season because there's just always something fun happening in the district. we're lucky to live in a city that constantly has new restaurant openings and cool things to get excited about.

here's what's on my list this spring.

1. menu. located in penn quarter, this market/bar/full-service restaurant is right up my alley. if you follow them on twitter, you'll know they have housemade bacon jam for sale. that's pretty much all the info i need to get me through the doors. it's run by the same guy who operates table, which, if you've been reading here regularly, you might remember me saying it was the best meal i've had in dc in the decade i've lived here. no bs.

2. eating outside. basically i'm sick of eating at my desk. i miss the days of taking my lunch outside and enjoying the sunshine. and even though it happens every spring, i'm dying to see some of the pretty trees begin to blossom.

3. maketto. this h street spot will bring together an asian-influenced restaurant and market. i don't know of anything like this in dc so i'm excited for the addition.

4. gcdc. love the concept. love their logo. freaking grilled cheese and tater tots man. and a sandwich with one of my personal faves on it: kimchi. what's better than that?

5. mad men. the premiere is april 13. i'm definitely a little over don draper's moody self, but i've watched all the other seasons so i'm excited to see how it all ends.

golden light

yesterday after the snow stopped falling, the sun came out.

right around three o'clock, the afternoon light was just about perfect so i pulled myself away from the breaking bad marathon we had going on and took a few pics of the rosebush in our front yard.

hope you enjoyed your day off if you got a snow day.

rain or snow, i didn't really care. i was just happy for the unexpected day off work.

and in case you're wondering, the perfect rain/snow day snack is a grilled cheese made with white cheddar, a granny smith apple slice, mustard, and sriracha.

sangria in the cold weather? why not.

this past week of weather perfectly illustrates why people hate winter.

cold and wet. grey. gloomy.

after the holidays are long gone, we're still faced with nearly three full months of winter.

and it starts with you, january.

and even though march can still bring the pain, it just sounds better than january and february to me.

we made the best of this weekend though: hung out with some good friends, checked out some art (free and not outside!), got some good food.

no matter what

if you've lived in the district for longer than a millisecond, you'll know it's an understatement to say that we have some pretty bi-polar weather here.

50 degrees one day and 80 the next?

psssh.

whatever.

that's a standard dc spring. or fall. and sometimes winter.

luckily, there's a few easy tricks to looking your best. even if may and june throw us some climatic curveballs.

let's start with a rainy day, acknowledging the fact that, most likely, it's not just rain we're dealing with but also the stifling humidity.

here's how to fight it:

1. an umbrella. easy.

2. anti-frizz styling cream. any brand will do. just find one you like.

3. waterproof shoes. when the weather gets warmer, i tend to avoid my knee-high wellies and look for something shorter. less chance of your legs suffocating.

4. socks! wellies without socks makes feet very sad. and hot. and blistery.

5. a brush or comb. to fix yourself back up once you're out of the weather.

6. a light jacket. preferably one with a hood. if it's hot and rainy (a dc springtime special!), skip the extra layer here.

7. a lightweight scarf. to wear with the jacket if it's a cool morning.

8. waterproof mascara. just in case. humidity has a way of making some less tough mascaras evaporate.

9. hair ties. because sometimes rain likes to ruin hair.

now let's talk about how to stay fresh and cool on one of those crazy hot dc days.

1. a hat. to keep the sun off that pretty little face.

2. sunglasses.

3. hair ties. because i'm one of those people who just can't leave their hair down when it's 98.

4. lip balm with spf. because lips can burn too. ouch.

5. facial towelettes. not always required, but they provide a quick refresh if you really need it.

6. deodorant. of course. and i'm not ashamed to admit that i keep at stick at my desk. i'm a sweaty kind of girl and it gets hot here. and no one wants to smell at the office.

7. sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen.

8. perfume roller. in a fresh and light scent like this grapefruit one.

so go ahead and bring the crazy, weather gods.

this winter has been pretty mild.

not like the one we had a few years ago

but i'm ready to see spring blossoms.

when the boy and i were still living in dupont, one of our favorite favorite things to do was go on photo walks.

we'd wander somewhat aimlessly around the city. we'd talk, he'd patiently wait while i took pictures, we'd stop for a drink, a bite of food.

we even walked to nats park once. that took a while.

we don't do those walks as much anymore, but doing this series about dc has made me long to go on one again.

we're going to try for tomorrow.

i went to college in florida and grew up in the southeastern part of the country. when i first moved to this area after graduation, i always heard people say that spring was their favorite season.

i liked spring, yeah.

but summer. that was my favorite.

then i lived through a few winters here (mild as they are!) and i finally understood what they were raving about.

summer still reigns supreme for me. i can't get enough heat.

but this time of year?

you're pretty cool, too.
